Gov’t Completes First Phase of Lighting Upgrades to Community Playing Fields

According to Hon. Oscar George, the Minister with responsibility for Youth and Sports, early investment in youth and community sports is crucial for achieving sustained success at national, regional, and international levels. He noted that lighting was a key concern raised during community consultations last year.

In response, the Ministry undertook a nationwide project to install lighting solutions at eight community playing fields. The upgraded facilities include:

  • Teza Grounds in Mahaut
  • Grand Fond Playing Field
  • Soufriere Playing Field
  • Anse de Mai Playing Field
  • Vielle Case Playing Field
  • Center Playing Field in Grand Bay
  • Glanvillia Playing Field
  • Bellevue Chopin Playing Field

The project's scope involved constructing concrete bases, trenching for underground cabling to align with Dominica’s climate resilience agenda, erecting 45-foot metal poles, and installing high-efficiency LED lights. The total cost for this phase was EC$1.4 million.

Minister George expressed hope that these lighting improvements would encourage optimal use by youth, women, and senior citizens for leagues, tournaments, and general outdoor recreation. He also confirmed that assessments are underway to identify additional fields for future upgrades. This initiative reflects the government's ongoing commitment to investing in sports as a means of fostering community development, youth engagement, and national pride.
