Prime Minister Skerrit Meets with Calibishie Residents Following Recent Flooding

Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, along with Parliamentary Representative for the Paix Bouche Constituency, Hon. Lakeyia Joseph, met with residents of Calibishie who were affected by recent flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

Prime Minister Skerrit emphasized that the purpose of the visit was to assess the extent of the damage, listen to residents' concerns, and explore ways in which the Government can continue to provide assistance.

Cleanup efforts in the area are progressing steadily, with heavy equipment mobilized to clear landslides and fallen rocks. Plans are also underway for the dredging of two ravines that currently pose a threat to the community.

Prime Minister Skerrit noted that although Calibishie lies below sea level and has a history of flooding, the Government has implemented several measures over the years to mitigate the impact. “Several years ago, we constructed a back drain based on residents' advice, but it has since become blocked. This time, we will be conducting more targeted and specific assessments of individual households,” the Prime Minister stated.

This week, Prime Minister Skerrit is expected to return to the community to meet with more impacted residents. “I look forward to meeting with individual families. This situation reflects the realities of climate change, but the community understands, and we are working quickly to restore a sense of normalcy,” he added.

Hon. Lakeyia Joseph echoed the Government’s commitment to assisting residents, assuring that the situation is under control and that the community will soon return to normalcy. “From the moment the flooding occurred, we began addressing residents’ concerns—pumping water from basements, clearing homes, and reopening roads,” she said.

Hon. Joseph also urged her constituents to remain vigilant during the ongoing hurricane season. “I encourage everyone to take this hurricane season seriously and ensure that each of us is prepared for whatever may come,” she advised.

She further commended the resilience of her constituents, noting their dedication to making their homes and community more disaster-resilient.

Prime Minister Skerrit and Hon. Joseph were joined on the visit by other members of Cabinet.
