WINDWARD ISLAND GAMES TO MAKE ITS RETURN AFTER TWO YEAR ABSENCE
The Windward Island Games will be making its return to the Sports Division calendar of activities this year.
This will be the first hosting of the games since 2019 due to the onset of the covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the opening ceremony for the secondary schools basketball championship held last Friday, Sports Coordinator Mr. Trevor Shillingford stated that they expect a return of the Windward Islands School Games in July 2023.
“This year we expect to see a return of the Windward Islands School Games. Last week, we had a meeting of Directors of Sports and we took the decision that there will be a return of the games this year. The last games were held in 2019 and Dominica hosted the games. Now Grenada has agreed to host the 2023 games and we are looking forward to this. We can already inform you that the date will be the 21st to the 29th of July 2023,” Mr. Shillingford stated.
The Sports Division is also scheduled to host a group of athletes from the St. Lucia Sports Academy next month.
“Also in April, the Sports Division will be hosting a contingent from the St. Lucia Sports Academy and they will be in Dominica to engage our students in a number of sporting activities. And only this week, we received information that the Sir Gary Sobers Cricket Tournament for schools will see a return this year. The last Sir Gary Sobers was held in 2019. So this is something that our young cricketers can look forward too,” the Sports Coordinator noted.
Mr. Shillingford further urged the young athletes to take advantage of the opportunities being made available to them by the Sports Division.
“So we are creating the opportunities for our student athletes. All we ask of you is to go out and give your best and when you do so please ensure that you display a high level of discipline and sportsmanship,” Shillingford added.
The games will feature competition in the sports of basketball, track and field, football, volleyball and netball.
